Notes from the President:
Visitors come from all over the world to our county- It’s a special place! Explore HolmesCounty, tell a friend or a family member some history you know about HolmesCounty so they can pass it along, or volunteer at the Holmes County Historical Society. I hope you take time to enjoy the many activities we offer and bring your family or a friend to some of the attractions. I would like to name a few: Lena’s Gift Shop has opened in the Victorian House, and the Holmes County Historical Playing Cards soon will be available, the Chinese Auction, monthly programs, Holidays at the Mansion, research some history of Holmes County in our library, and you can keep up-o-date on our web site. These are exciting times and we would like you to include them in your plans.

The roof restoration project is moving forward. A letter of intent was sent to our low bidder General Restoration corp. of Columbus, Ohio for the sum of $123,720.00. this included all the work associated with the slate roof., copper gutter, down spouts and tuck pointing of the 3 chimneys. A contract will be issued to the General Restoration corp. after we receive our grant form the Ohio Cultural Facilities commission to fund the project.
Since our low bid came in under our budgeted figure for the project, the commission allowed us to submit proposals for additional work that needs done to the house. These proposals included porch repair and the installation of a 13 KW generator. The porch repairs are underway and the generator has been installed. The additional work brings the total of our project to $129,466.00 that will be deducted from the available grant of $140,000. The unused funds of $10,534 can be used for unseen job costs.
The tuck pointing of the chimneys is to be started by October 29 and should be completed within 10 days as permitted by weather and temperature.
Mark has submitted the preliminary plus additional information to the state that will lead to a November 29 meeting with the Cultural Commission. Presently the information is in the review phase leading to the meeting with the executive board of the Cultural Commission. Upon approval of our grant a formal contract will be immediately sent to General Restoration Corp. They will require 6-8 weeks to obtain the slate. Work will begin as soon as possible after receipt of the slate and as permitted by the weather.
Hopefully this project can be completed by March 31, 2008.
