MURRAY TUNNEL - HOLMES COUNTY

What is this unusual underground structure found a few miles out of Glenmont. The Murray Tunnel has baffled experts such as the Ohio Preservation Office, Mid West Epigraphic Society and New England Center for the Antiquities. Located on the old Murray farm, currently owned by the Holmes Co. Humane Society, the tunnel was built into a hill with massive stones, intricately placed. The tunnel expands at the end into a room with an arched ceiling. No one knows what culture or time period it was built but some reports date it back more then 500 years old perhaps much older. There are other strange surface structure in the area. NOTE - The Murray Tunnel is on private property and periodically the area is open to the public for viewing. Watch local media for scheduled open houses of the area. The Holmes Co. Historical Society has much information in its archives about the tunnel including a report filed in the 1980's and carbon dating research. Contact the society for more detailed information. info@holmeshistory.com
